Fully guided elk hunts in the back country of Idaho by horseback. We have 500 private acres that are surrounded by natioanl forest and is only accessible by horse back or foot. This makes this area with very little hunting pressure. We harvest only 5×5 bulls or better out of this camp. Guide ratio is 1 guide to 2 hunters. Gourmet meals in camp with fresh pies made daily right out of the 1890′s wood cook stove. In researching Elk hunters success, we found that outfitters across the west average 17-21% harvest, while non guided hunts success average 7-12%. That is counting cows, calves, and bull harvest for gun and bow anywhere. Our actual harvest on branch antlered bull is over 50% at the Gilmore Ranch. Which is better than double the average success. Expecting 50% harvest is realistic. Every year bulls between 350 and 400 B&C are harvested or seen in the area.
Success hinges on the skill of the hunter and physical condition, while the most important ingredient for success is the weather and some Luck!
